Superyachts from around the world have started to descend on the YCCS Marina in Virgin Gorda, the British Virgin Islands. Boat International Media and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda are preparing to welcome owners, guests and race crew to the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous that starts tomorrow Wednesday 19th and continues to the 22nd. The event which will host an impressive collection of superyachts will take place off the tranquil island of Virgin Gorda, where the stunning coastline, inshore coral reefs and all the warm Caribbean trade winds one could ask for will combine to present outstanding sailing conditions.

A mix of performance and cruising superyachts divided by class will compete over three days to take the prestigious title. New superyachts to the event include the Italian race team Robertissima on Leopard III, who are rapidly cementing their name on the international race circuit, as well as an exciting selection of new build superyachts; award winning Seahawk by Perini Navi, carbon composite Inoui built by Vitters, Humphrey's built J Class inspired yacht Tempus Fugit and the powerfully rigged Ganesha launched by Vitters in late 2013. Returning superyachts include Aiyana, Freya and Sarafin, who will be aiming to capitalise upon their knowledge of the tricky waters out on the race course. Stay right here with Megayacht Global as we will keep you posted on the days action and results as they come in.

Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta - Day 1

The owners, their guests and crews prepared for day 1 of the Caribbean Loro Piana on Thursday morning and with 13 to 17 kts of breeze from the east it was shaping up for some ideal sailing conditions. The race committee led by principal race officer Peter Craig, selected two similar courses for the three cruising divisions, sending the fleet clockwise around Virgin Gorda. Class C rounded the western point at Round Rock, while Classes A and B headed a bit further to round Ginger Island before a straight upwind leg inside the Dog Islands to the finish just to the west of Necker Island.

The superyachts were started under a staggered start with the slowest rated yacht first, it was the 29m Altair that got racing underway. The first beat up to the northeastern corner of Virgin Gorda was straightforward, but there were opportunities for the skilled tacticians to make gains in the wind shifts. For some, particularly the larger superyachts racing including the 60m Perini Navi Seahawk, 57m Royal Huisman built Twizzle and the 55m ketch Marie, a straight tack more or less to the lay line east of Necker Island was the preferred option, while some of the smaller superyachts put in more tacks to make best use of the conditions.

As the fleet headed around the south side of Virgin Gorda,  the kites started to fly and the faster superyachts that started later began to cut through the fleet making for a spectacular sight of colorful kites, superyachts and turquoise waters. Leading the pack was the fully black 37m Fitzroy built yacht Moonbird, with Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson at the helm, followed by the beautiful modern classic Tempus Fugit running close to the shore and the mighty Seahawk out to weather.

As the Class C superyachts hit their turning mark, off Round Rock at the western corner of Virgin Gorda, Moonbird had notched up more than three minutes on second place superyacht Sarafin, the Oyster 100. Tempus Fugit followed just a minute and a half later.

Meanwhile, the Class A and B yachts continued on to round Ginger Island, and as the kites came down it was Marie that rounded first, hotly pursued by a flying Nilaya, the 34m Reichel/Pugh built by Baltic. The two yachts had built up quite a gap over the pursuing pack, which was led by Leopard by Robertissima and Hetairos, with Freya, the Vitters built Inoui, Swans Selene and Alpina, Alia Shipyard’s Aiyana, Wally Yachts Saudade and the Southern Wind Blues holding off the J classic Rainbow with Mr. Loro Piana at the helm.

Moonbird took the line honours for Class C and Hetairos cruised through on the water to take Class A and B line honours, although the corrected times would show the real winners.

When the results were in, Nilaya had taken the bullet in Class A ahead of Leopard by Robertissima and Inoui. Class B victory went to Freya, ahead of Alpina and Selene making a clean sweep for the Swans. In Class C Tempus Fugit took the win, just one minute 41 seconds on corrected ahead of Sarafin, with Moonbird taking third. A great day was had by all as some of the owners commented:

Peter Corr, owner of Aiyana, has only missed one Loro Piana Caribbean Regatta since it started. "It's wonderful, it's great to be back. Nothing's better than sailing in the BVIs, constant winds, great fun, beautiful sun, warm water and great competitors. This is a really great line up of boats and it was great fun today."

"We're over the moon," says a delighted Erbil Arkin, owner of Tempus Fugit. "I'm loving being here. I just crossed the ocean my first crossing, which was a bucket list thing to come and race here so for me it's absolutely great, it's marvelous. The plan for tomorrow is just to keep it going with the enthusiasm we have."

Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta - Day 2

Day 2 on Friday began as the fleet of 20 superyachts spanning from 24.4m (80ft) to 66m (216ft) in length and totaling 779.4m (2,557ft) of sailing technology and design headed out to the start line just west of Necker Island. The race committee announced a course that would take the fleet anticlockwise round Virgin Gorda in a reverse of race one. This also meant an exciting downwind start for the superyachts, with plenty of challenges and high pressure for the tacticians and crews.

There were alterations to the ratings of six yachts overnight as the panel of experts that included pro Peter Craig, International Super Yacht Rule creator Jim Teeters, and a selection of independent and well respected yachting pros such as Cam Appleton and Jens Christensen assessed the data from the first day of racing.

Even with the rating changes the start order remained the same beginning with the slowest rated superyacht Altair, then superyachts starting at two minute intervals after. Many chose to hoist their kites on the line, with several yachts hitting the pin end at pace and timing it to the second.

As the yachts approached the Dog Islands and doused spinnakers for the fetch south, the faster yachts starting later in the order had already made good ground on the slower superyachts. The 37m Fitzroy Moonbird had clocked up a healthy two minute lead over the next superyacht, the 60m Perini Navi Seahawk as they reached Round Rock, their turning mark for the beat north up the east coast of Virgin Gorda.

The faster superyachts in Classes A and B had a longer leg and were sent west of Ginger Island before heading back round Virgin Gorda. There was a battle of the giants at the front with the 57m ketch Twizzle holding off the 55m ketch Marie for the lead on the water. A flurry of superyachts followed including Selene, yesterday's Class A winner Nilaya, Aiyana, the new Fitzroy built Ohana, Hetairos and Inoui all battling for passing lanes and clean air.

In the end Moonbird took line honors again, and they had built up enough of a lead on the water after a great day's racing to take first place in Class C on corrected time, ahead of Sarafin and Seahawk. In Class A, the Baltic built Nilaya scored a second victory ahead of 37m Ohana who put in an impressive performance today and in third the massive ketch Hetairos. Class B went to Twizzle, with race one winner Freya in second and Marie in third. It was shaping up for a great final day of racing.

Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta - Final Day

For the final day of racing the race committee chose to set a custom course, sending the fleet to a windward laid mark and a spreader before setting them on a downwind run towards the Dog Islands. Leaving the Dogs to starboard, the course continued toward a laid mark near Ginger Island, with the return to the finish leaving the Dogs to starboard once again.

Right from the start there was a split in the fleet, with the first two superyachts to cross the line, the 29m Altair and the 60m Seahawk opting to head right up the beat, while Tempus Fugit and Moonbird went left. By the first mark, it was Tempus Fugit that had stolen the early lead, rounding 50 seconds ahead of Seahawk, with Moonbird sneaking up the inside just three seconds later. With the fleet choosing to split left or right, there was some close action at the first mark that demonstrated just how close superyachts can race.

As the superyachts hoisted their kites at the spreader mark, once again the fleet split between gybes. Moonbird began to haul in Tempus Fugit and before long had taken the lead on the water, which she then stretched all the way round the course.

By the final leg, Marie had stormed through to second on the water, followed by Sarafin, Twizzle, Tempus Fugit and Nilaya, and meaning that many of the final standings in the three Classes were still wide open. By the time the fleet had finished the last leg to the finish, tension was high, but when the corrected times were calculated it was the J Class Rainbow with Pier Luigi Loro Piana at the helm that had come through to take the win in Class A ahead of Nilaya and the 50m Fitzroy Ohana.

In Class B, another solid race by the Swan Freya gave her another bullet, ahead of the 57m Twizzle putting in another strong performance followed by the 55m ketch Marie. The Class C win went to Moonbird, who had pulled out enough of a lead on the water to hold off a strong challenge by Sarafin, with Tempus Fugit coming home third.

After such a dramatic finish to the event, Bernard Lambilliotte of Moonbird was all smiles with the win. "My first reaction," he said after racing, "is to thank everyone for organising such a beautiful regatta and for getting together such an exceptional gathering of superyachts. I was here two years ago, the first event was a pretty exciting one to start with. What you see today is nearly a repeat of what we have in Sardinia in the summer, even better given the setting. We had very friendly and super professional racing so I really enjoyed it, it was really fantastic."

The final regatta standings gave the Class A win to Nilaya after a fantastic performance, with Rainbow taking second on count back over Ohana in third. It was a similar story in Class B, the dominant performance of Freya gave her overall victory, but a tight battle between Twizzle and Marie ended with Twizzle taking second on count back and Marie landing third. In Class C, Moonbird's solid race today secured her Class win over Sarafin, with Tempus Fugit taking a creditable third.

A fantastic event was had by all and everyone here at Megayacht Global are looking forward to next years action. For more information and videos visit Boat International Media.

Erdevicki Superyacht Design's New Explorer

Erdevicki superyacht design have presented their newest creation, the modernisation of a 38m (125ft) trawler. The brief was to minimise any structural changes to the hull and accommodation while updating the exterior look of the trawler into a modern day explorer. The design needed to incorporate modern exterior lines and curves to soften the harsh rugged appearance of the trawler.

The original portholes in the hull were retained with the six mid-hull ones enlarged to allow more light to the lower deck. The large windows on the main deck are integrated together to give a stunning panoramic appearance which will let in more natural light and give great outside views.

The superstructure has been redesigned with rounded curves for a softer look and the fly bridge remains the same original size but with a larger wrap around windshield. The upper deck will be able to carry two tenders, a dinghy and two jet skis which are all handled by a hydraulic crane that's stowed neatly on the deck.

She will have accommodation for 10 – 11 guests in one master suit and four double guest cabins, one with an additional pullman berth. The crew of 6 or 7 is accommodated in four cabins that include the captains plus three doubles. She will have a range of 4000nm at a cruising speed of 12kts.

Heesen Yachts have announced that on February 28 2014 the hull and superstructure of their first ever 55m (180ft) steel Fast Displacement megayacht were joined together at the Heesen facility in Oss. YN 17255 was sold in February 2013 thanks to a collaboration with a commercial family office "Bilderlings Wealth" which represents the client and manages the project.

Her revolutionary Fast Displacement hull was developed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects in collaboration with Heesen Yachts in house naval architects. When underway she will be able to reach the remarkable top speed of 16.5kts, with a range of 4,500nm at a cruising speed of 13kts.

Perry van Oossanen comments: "This 55m marks the 10th Heesen for which Van Oossanen Naval Architects have provided the naval architecture package, and the 4th based on the successful Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF). At Van Oossanen Naval Architects we believe the 55m will set a benchmark in terms of efficiency: propelling around 600 tonnes of steel and aluminum at 15 knots with only half of the power installed (1300kW) is quite remarkable!"

Frank Laupman from Omega Architects created her exterior lines. She has extensive outdoor spaces with a 110sqm sun deck and a 70sqm private owner's terrace. The tenders and toys are stored in the garage located at the front (seen in the below image) and launched from the two gull wing doors on each side. The lazarette can now be dedicated to a wide beach club and gym with a generous swim platform that allows the owners and their guests to swim and relax right at the sea's edge.

Dutch designer Sinot has been appointed to design the interior where twelve guests are accommodated in six cabins: the master suite traditionally located on the main deck forward featuring a recessed balcony, a full beam VIP lies on the lower deck alongside two twins and two doubles.

She is due to be delivered to her owners in the summer of 2015 after intensive sea trials in the North Sea.

Another type of megayacht support yacht entered the market earlier this week as YXT ONE was launched by Lynx Yachts in Zaandam, Holland. She is the first of a series of purpose built pocket support yachts. The "Yacht X Tender or YXT" series is aimed at acting as a support vessel to megayachts between 30m (98ft) and 70m (229ft).

At only 24m she can carry a host of toys and large tenders while freeing up space on the main yacht and eradicating the problems associated with towing. At anchor the YXT acts as a large beach club and depending on the custom configuration below decks she offers a sauna, spa, gym or extra accommodation for guests, staff or crew.

She is also an ideal support vessel for large sailing yachts often hampered by the lack of large tenders and space for recreational areas like spas, saunas and gyms. She was built in Holland by Lynx Yachts with naval architecture and designed by Diana Yacht Design. The possibilities for an owner to configure a YXT to his/her specific needs is huge.

Lynx Yachts is a young and dynamic shipyard. Following the successful delivery of Heliad II a 33m (108ft) Twin Screw Canoe Stern megayacht also designed by Diana Yacht Design. the team decided that the build had been such a pleasant experience for all involved that they should try to repeat itso soon after came the contract for YXT hull number one.

A wolf is born! as Heesen Yachts announce that YN 16650 was launched on March 28th, 2014. During the private ceremony the owner christened this sexy megayacht"Monaco Wolf", so watch out "Little Red Riding Hood".

Rupert Nelson, a Director at Burgess who introduced the client to Heesen comments: "The Heesen production team were on hand for the launching and it was a privilege to meet them in person. So often we meet the project front men and women, but it is equally important to know the production team - especially where there are shortened delivery schedules. Their support is crucial during the final stages prior to delivery."

The latest MTU engines, 16V 4000 M73L power Monaco Wolf, which results in a top speed of 23kts and a range of over 3,100nm. The highly distinctive flowing lines were designed by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects who has captured the iconic Heesen exterior styling  along with its reverse sheer pelican beak bow.

Her elegant interior design has been created by acclaimed Italian designer Francesco Paszkowski who comments: "I am very pleased to have had the chance to work with Heesen again. I like the way they challenge the designers while working on the project and defining its details. The result is a virtuous circle that combines technical and safety aspects with design and style, while keeping Heesen’s outstanding quality standards and our proposals. Team work played a crucial role in bringing this project to fruition."

"Working at Heesen was gratifying because our design proposals were never refused whether related to new materials or custom elements. They perfectly translated every detail of our drawings into reality" adds Margherita Casprini, the architect who worked with Francesco Paszkowski on this project.

One of her main features are the lighting systems throughout which produce custom controlled lighting that can transform the atmosphere from bright party mode through to pools of subtle illumination.

She can accommodate up to twelve guests in six staterooms. The master suite is traditionally located forward on the main deck, where both bedroom and bathroom are full beam with windows running along their entire length. The other guest suites are found on the lower deck and include a full beam VIP, two double and two twin cabins.

She will be tested in the North Sea before being delivered to her owners at the end of May 2014.

The eagerly anticipated megayacht "Graceful" left the dock in Hamburg on Friday, April 18th after Blohm+Voss successfully delivered her to her new owner after completion of her sea trials and a 23 month build programme. She joins some of the most iconic megayachts in the world and currently ranks as the 67th largest megayacht ever to be launched measuring in at 82m (269ft).

The combination and cooperation of the team that was made up of Blohm+Voss, the owner's representatives and Capt. Alexander Mozhayskiy led to a very fast build time overall for a yacht of this size, quality and level of complexity. Her design comes from the pencils at the award winning H2 Design Studio in London, widely recognised as one of the most technically competent design teams in the yacht world.

One of the many reasons why the owner decided to have the yacht completed by Blohm+Voss was the unique and complex equipment and design characteristics, one of which is a 15 x 3m indoor pool, which can be converted to a dance floor by raising the pool floor. The owner's suite spreads over two floors with a beach door terrace for direct access to the sea, there will also be two VIP and three guest suites for a further 10 guests. The accommodation is equipped with the most modern audio and video equipment. She also has a helicopter landing area enabling a comfortable arrival and departure for the owner and guests.

Shuairan is a sleek 35m (115ft) superyacht designed by Pannone Architetti that's aimed to bring together the two worlds of motor yachts and sailing yachts. The project wants to be a point of contact between the two types of boats, between two ways to navigate and between two yacht philosophies that are often in contrast.

Her exterior lines are sleek, with high windows and a sharp bow that glides through the water. The deckhouse has large seemless windows that will allow natural light penetrate the saloon below, bringing the outside in. At the stern she will have a configuration of sofas similar to that seen motor yachts, but with two consoles for instruments next to the two rudders. Forward of the rudders, there will be an external dining area that's removable if necessary, to leave more freedom to maneuver in a superyacht regatta.

Inside at the stern, there will be an area with two crew cabins for the crew and one for the captain, kitchen and technical area. The accommodation for the guests will include three cabins with en suite bathrooms and an owners master cabin located forward with a full beam bathroom. She is a project that aims to satisfy the most demanding owners, who are searching for a unique project with a motor and sailing combination in design, comfort and safety.

Her lighting is designed to emphasize most of the exterior lines while the adjustable interior lighting provides maximum comfort at night for owner and guests.

Feadship Steal The Show in Amsterdam

Feadship stole the show at last nights World Superyacht Awards in Amsterdam as they were presented with no less than three of the sought after Neptune trophies. The stunning 99m (325ft) Feadship "Madame GU" won the award for best Displacement Motor Yacht of 2,000GT and above, while the recently launched 62m (203ft) "Sea Owl" took home the Neptune for best Displacement Motor Yacht of 1,300GT to 1,999GT. If that wasn't enough for Feadship, Madame GU was presented with the top prize: "Superyacht of the Year 2014".

This years World Superyacht Awards was even more special than usual for Feadship and the other leading Dutch yards, as this was the first time that the annual ceremony was held in the Netherlands.

"It was a privilege to work with such a groundbreaking owner on Madame GU and to enjoy a delightful cooperation with Andrew Winch," comments Feadship director Henk de Vries. "The client pushed us to our limits by demanding the most complicated interior ever on the largest Feadship ever. Onboard Madame GU we created things that resemble the Palace of Versailles, except the technology we applied and the finesse and craftsmanship were unavailable at the time that chateau was created."

The equally sophisticated Feadship Sea Owl was built for experienced owners who are exceptionally private. Her distinctive jade mist green and oyster white exterior contains an interior (also designed by Andrew Winch) with an extraordinarily detailed selection of hand carved pieces, sculptures, petrified wood items and marbles. One of her main features is a sensational stairwell carving of the tree of life: That decends from the canopy on the sun deck to the roots in the floor of the guest suites in the lower deck, the tree takes up the entire wall.

"Sea Owl is the most refined boat built by the industry to date," says Feadship director Dick van Lent. "From the interior to the exterior, from the tenders to the onboard systems, from the wood carvings to the murals, she is a truly extraordinary bespoke achievement. It was a magical adventure to work with the owners of Sea Owl on a family oriented superyacht that captures the essence of the highly individual Feadship building experience."

Voyagers Award
  • Joint winner - 50m, Exuma, Picchiotti/Perini Navi
Exuma is a 50m motor yacht built by Picchiotti/Perini Navi to a design by Philippe Briand of Vitruvius Yachts. At the design stage, Exuma was specifically customised for cruising the more remote areas of the Pacific and her entry, written personally by the owner, catalogues an example of this: An adventurous voyage, made between 2012 and 2013, that started in New Caledonia and Vanuatu and progressed through the Solomon Islands to Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, Palau, and Sabah ending in the Philippines. Not only was the account well written and beautifully illustrated, it also displayed an enviable depth of knowledge of, and interaction with the various populations encountered throughout the itinerary. The judges considered it to be an excellent example of a cruise that deserved recognition.

  • Joint winner - 37m, Zeepaard, JFA Yachts
Zeepaard was built by JFA Yachts in France in 2003 and is a 37m expedition yacht designed for adventurous voyages. Her circumnavigation between 2009 and 2013, starting and finishing in the Mediterranean, certainly qualified as such, covering a total of 50,000nm and 39 countries. While the totality of the voyage was too long a duration to qualify for the Voyager's Award, the judges extracted a portion which fell within the two year limit specified within the rules. Even so, this was an epic cruise. As the judges were to see from a small sample of the 40,000 or so images, it was clear that the owner, along with his family and friends, encountered incredible experiences everywhere they went, even in the rather more adventurous "pirate zones", for which they were well prepared. This was a notable voyage of exactly the type for which expedition yachts were designed, and the judges considered it most worthy of a Neptune.

Heesen announced the christening of YN 16551 that's now known as "My Sky". She is a 51m (167ft) full displacement long range megayacht of 600GT with a range of 5,400nm at 10kts. Her bold but sleek exterior is from the design board of Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. Her flush mounted tinted windows were thermo bonded to the superstructure create a continuous wall of glass that gives this vessel a very distinctive sleek look.

World renowned architect Erick van Egeraat designed the ultra-contemporary, sharp and sophisticated interior. There is a strong contrast between dark and light throughout the yacht and a luxurious atmosphere is created; combining crisp white leather with dark high-gloss Makassar wood.

My Sky accommodates 12 guests in five cabins. The spacious full beam master suite is located on the main deck forward and has a large bathroom including a full natural stone clad steam shower and a spacious walk-in closet. The four guest cabins are located on the lower deck.

The main saloon aft, with its large circular dining, lounge and bar area with a 6m2 LED screen, connects to the main deck aft, which organizes built-in settees and seats around two low coffee tables. The upper deck lounge, with its 270 degrees view and circular seating area, opens onto the aft terrace, accommodating a large dining table ideal for al fresco dining, even under way. Finally, the Sundeck's large Jacuzzi, surrounded by sun-pads to aft, is perfect for total relaxation.

The touch and go helicopter pad at the bridge also turns into a large sun terrace providing secluded lounging even when the boat is docked stern into the marinas.

She is due for delivery to her new owners in November 2014 after intensive sea trials in the North Sea.
